A fertility Journey

I was diagnosed with KS at 17. I have it very mildly but still was told I would not be able to father any children. When I got into a serious relationship it was something that me and my wife knew that we would need to look at. When I first saw my local consultant, he reiterated that I could not father any children and suggested that we look at the various options available – more specifically a sperm donor. We booked another appointment to see him in a year.
Upon returning, the consultant explained that the technology involved for extracting sperm had evolved and that there were some consultants who had gone to the USA to view and learn a technique that had proved successful for infertile men. This involved collecting sperm samples from the testis directly to contribute to start for a family. To have the operation I had to stop my testosterone treatment (that I had been having since I was 17). I found this very hard.
The procedure I had was the PESA/TESA*, this was at a hospital an hour away. The procedure was a success and the consultant extracted 3 samples of sperm, enough for 3 full fresh cycles of IVF and additional frozen ones. This was in 2011 but our “journey” started in 2009. In all this was over 7 years of treatments.
We received one full round of IVF on the NHS, the rest were funded through ourselves and family. We had a total of 6 rounds (fresh and frozen). It really does consume your life.
We had our daughter, on our 2nd full cycle in 2013. Our last cycle was in February 16 using our last frozen egg. Although my wife became pregnant, unfortunately we lost our baby daughter 9 weeks before she was due to be born.
I was 27 when our daughter was born, and my wife was 33.

*Percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration (PESA) With PESA, we insert a fine needle into the epididymis – a tube at the back of the testicles that stores and carries sperm – and collect sperm using gentle suction. Testicular sperm aspiration (TESA) Here we use a small syringe and needle to take sperm directly from the testis.
