Intersex or variations in sex characteristics (VSC) fam
Intersex people are born with sex characteristics, such as sex chromosomes, genitalia or hormones, that do not fit typical binary notions of male or female bodies.
In Klinefelter’s Syndrome (KS/XXY) the sex chromosomes are not typically male nor typically female.
People do not have to call themselves intersex simply because they are thought to be so by others.
Intersex is not:
- about sexual orientation
- about gender or gender identity
- an identity issue
- a medical condition, disorder or disability or pathology or a condition of any sort.
Intersex, DSD or VSC
Since 2011, the medical profession have used the term DSD instead of Intersex. However there is continuing controversy over this as many intersex individuals do not consider themselves to be ‘disordered’ or in need of repair. On the other hand, others find the term ‘Intersex’ frightening. The KSA uses Variations in Sex Characteristics (VSC)
